The hole starts with the right drill.
Standard carbide drills selected for geometry, diameter stability and reliable chip evacuation across PCB production cycles.
Standard Carbide Drills for PCB Production
NF Trading supplies a selected range of solid-carbide drills for professional PCB manufacturing, developed to provide dimensional accuracy, stable hole quality and repeatable performance on multilayer, rigid, flexible and high-density boards.
Tool selection
The correct drill geometry depends on diameter, stack configuration, board material, copper distribution, entry material, backup board and machine capability. NF Trading supports technicians in selecting the most suitable model and operating window for each application.
Carbide and mechanical behaviour
PCB drills operate under high rotational speed and cyclic bending loads. Carbide grade, grain size and tool geometry therefore influence rigidity, wear resistance and breakage risk. Smaller diameters require especially accurate control of runout, handling and stack alignment.
The technical diagrams illustrate the effect of force on a tungsten-carbide bar, chip formation during drilling and the main functional areas of a PCB drill: cutting point, flute, body and shank.
Process parameters
For consistent results, technicians should monitor:
- Spindle speed and infeed, matched to tool diameter and laminate type.
- Retract rate and hit count, adjusted to thermal load and required hole quality.
- Tool runout and collet condition, especially for micro-drilling.
- Entry and backup materials, stack height and panel clamping.
- Chip evacuation and compressed-air quality.
Typical quality indicators
Hole-wall condition, nail heading, smear, burrs, entry accuracy, drill wander and tool wear should be checked during process validation. Variation in these indicators can reveal incorrect parameters, spindle runout, unsuitable support materials or a worn drill.
Technical support
NF Trading provides model-specific data sheets, drilling-parameter calculators and troubleshooting guides. Our team can also support trial planning, parameter optimisation and defect analysis directly with production technicians.
